It can be a good idea to have a project (or a few) to work on. This year I decided to try using flash on my macro insect shots.  I have always been torn about using flash with nature images, mostly because I am concerned about the impact on the creature but also it can cast an artificial colour on the image.  However, when I took a few trial shots the insects didn't seem to be impacted and the flash can freeze the movement which is useful in low light conditions.  The day before my recent trip to the botanic gardens my new diffuser arrived from Amazon.  So the plan for the day was to mostly use my 180mm macro lens on my R5ii and have a flash on the flash mount with the diffuser reducing the impact of the light. I think it will be a steep learning curve.  I battled with flash settings and found it hard to get something I was comfortable with.

This shot was taken with an aperture of f/14, a shutter speed of 1/200 (limited because of flash) and ISO-400.  Unfortunately, the file information does not provide flash settings so I have no idea what I used for this or any of the other shots I took.
