Long-tailed tits are on my list of favorite Irish Birds but unlike the coal tits and blue tits, which are frequent visitors to my garden, the long-tailed tits seem more elusive. I see them in the park and on walks but they seem to specialise in hiding in high up trees (out of the range of the camera lens). But, the plus is when you spot one, it is usually among a flock. So, you can imagine the joy when a flock arrived in my garden this January. And, typically they tended to stay in the middle of the tree and have quick dashes to the feeder. Each time they arrived the weather was dull and overcast which provided an additional challenge to taking photos through the kitchen window.
This shot was taken with my Canon R5ii and my RF 100-500 mm lens (@500 mm) handheld through a not so clean kitchen window. Unfortunately, the open aperture of f7.1 when extended to 500 mm resulted in me having to lower the shutter speed to 1/250 sec which I felt was too slow for a bird that constantly bobs about. Even with the reduced shutter speed auto ISO came out with 8000. I feel that the R5ii does not manage noise nearly as well as my R6 which is extremely frustrating.
