Remembering the Famine

I spent today editing a batch of photos taken on the 17th of January.  After capturing some shots of the Samuel Beckett Bridge at sunrise and a breakfast stop we went to take photos of the Famine memorial.  The sunlight was by now harsh so it was best to convert the photos to mono (with a slight sepia tone).  I took a series of photos of the memorial, some typical, some low level and some close up.  But for me it was the backdrop which provided the story.  The statues depict the desperation of a population forced to flee to avoid starvation and in hope of a better life but the are positioned in the buoyant financial services area with many financial corporate giants located nearby.  Yes, modern Ireland is different, very different and no longer dependent on the potato crop.  However, many are still struggling with landlords and now the corporate bosses reel off the demands.  As the world faces economic uncertainty, the risks increasing daily, there is a fear that a depression will occur.  The Famine memorial is a reminder of how dependent and fragile a nation we were and sparks a little fear as we ponder what is ahead.
