Half Asleep / Half Awake

 A A

A lovely birthday treat, one of my red eye tree frogs woke as I was cleaning it's enclosure.  I am still not sure if it was Oscar or Charlie.  After a few panicked moments and a bit of jumping he settled on the top of an artificial jungle tree. He relaxed so I decided to grab the camera and try get a few shots.  Being nocturnal, it is rare to see them awake and visible during daylight.  He was also showing his stunning bright daytime green rather than the darker green when there are no lights on.  I chose this shot from the 300 plus shots I accidently took as you could see his nictitating membrane half closed.  The mesh like membrane protests their stunning red eyes.  I had my camera on silent shutter so as not to distress the frog.  In excitement I kept my finger on burst mode a little too long hence the 300 similar shots, but luckily it allowed me to capture that moment with the half mesh within the sequence.

It is extremely challenging to take photos of red eye tree frogs as their eyes are extremely sensitive to light.  The enclosure was only lit with the UBV light (to facilitate absorption of vitamin D) so settings is always going to be a challenge.  Luckily he was close to the light which helped.  I used a shutter speed of 1/250 sec. and an aperture of f/5 which resulted in an auto  ISO of 10,000.  I set the exposure to -0.7 because the UBV light was causing bright glare on the frog.
