A bird that has been elusive and challenging for me. I have tried to take photos of them in a couple of locations including my local park and along the River Dodder. They are fascinating birds then tend to be in small flocks with a weaving flight motion that is fast. When they stop it tends to be in trees that are hard to shoot through and focus the camera. Surprisingly this photo was taken in my back garden! It is rare to see them (rare to see just one) in the garden but yesterday couple arrived and were flirting about the place. I managed to take a few shots of one as it perched right at the top of a leafless Acer. I was delighted as I didn't have any luck trying to photograph them in Glendalough the previous day..
I used a shutter speed of 1/800 sec with an open aperture f/7.1 (due to using my 100-500 mm RF lens) and as the light was poor auto ISO set to 8000 500mm. Topaz DeNoise helped eliminate the worst of the grain caused by the high ISO.
