The Hungry Buzzard

Another trip to Irish Photography Hides in Laois, this time to the Limekiln Hide with the hope of seeing a buzzard as well as the red squirrel. And what a treat Bernadette and I witnessed.  The buzzard arrived for a feast on the bait provided by Richard and stayed so long we could have shots at almost every angle.  And, with it being April we had the joy of a clear enough background with bare trees.

From a photography perspective I had my trusted R6 on a Manfrotto 055 carbon fiber tripod with a Benro aluminum gimbal head.  As I tend to only use my gimbal in a hide and don't have to carry it for miles I chose to save money and buy the aluminum over the more expensive carbon fiber option. When I took this shot I had a shutter speed of 1/2000 sec.  My lens was zoomed to 451mm which gave an open aperture of f/6.3 and the bright day resulted in an auto ISO of 400.  I set the exposure to -0.3.

I chose this image from the 100+ I edited of the buzzard because I liked the way it was starring right at me with it's mouth wide open with food visible.  The photos were challenging to edited because of the stark contrast between the dark bird and the bright sky but tweaking in Lightroom brought improvements from the original raw image.

Occasionally I feature a second photo in my posts and this one was chosen because I liked the way I froze the gut as it fell.  Settings this time was shutter 1/2000 sec but as I was zoomed to 500mm open aperture was f7.1 and ISO increased to 640.
