These two image of two male chaffinches was taken at Irish Photography Hides in Ballyfin, Co. Laois. The first captioned 'Love' features two male chaffinches that look like they are kissing. The image below captioned 'Hate' shows the warring male chaffinches.
It was a cold January day and the water on the reflection pool was frozen, reducing the opportunity to get a reflection. There wasn't that much activity from the pine marten so I spent a bit of time trying to improve my skills on taking creatures moving. The image above was taken with a shutter speed of 1/5000 and an open aperture of f9 and auto ISO was 6400. I set compensation at -0.7 as the light on the body of the finches was blowing the highlights on the wings. My R6 with the 100-400mm EF lens + extender was on my tripod with a gimbal head to allow quick and smooth movement. The lens was zoomed to 286mm so I had a better chance of keeping up with the action.
(1/5000 sec. F9 and ISO 5000 with -0.7 exposure)
