This photo of mating Darters was taken at National Botanic Gardens Kilmacurragh. Like the smaller damselflies, dragonflies make an amazing heart shape with their bodies as they mate. It was difficult to get this photo as there was an abundance of vegetation and harsh sunlight reflecting off the water.
I used an aperture of f16 to try get more of the mating pair in focus. To achieve this I slightly dropped my shutter speed to 1/800 sec. and had an ISO of 1000. As usual of my out and about wildlife shots it was taken hand-held with my 100-400mm lens and 1.4 extender maxed to 560mm.
On the same day I managed to get mating shots of the more petite damselflies in the high grass beyond the pond towards the old house.
