This photo was taken today in Altamont Gardens in Carlow. The 16 hectare site provides a good variety for visitors. Entery to the estate is free and there is a nominal 2 charge for parking. The site has a lovely coffee shop to have refreshments. This photo of the hoverfly was taken in the more formal garden area. The are also great opportunities to take photos of waterfowl and damsel and dragon flies as well as other wildlife in the bog garden. A walk in the glen and arboretum is nice on a warm summers day.
I used a shutter speed of 1/1600 sec. as the hoverfly was moving. The hoverfly is slightly easier than bees and wasps as it is slower due to it's hovering motion. Because I had my 1.4 extender on my 100-400 (using the full 560 mm reach) my open aperture was f8 which resulted in an iso3200.
