Local parks and other areas where the public are allowed to walk provided opportunities to observe nature and practice photography skills during periods with Covid travel restrictions. I witnessed (as you will have seen from other postings) cygnets, ducklings and other chicks developing and being nurtured by the parents.
The Little Grebe has always been a challenge for me. The darkness of the bird, the bright green at the beak and the fact that they constantly dive underwater and pop up a good distance way has left me struggling. I longed for a shot with a fish in the beak...
I decided stroll along the lakeside in the grounds of Terenure College while waiting to meet a friend. As I looked in the lake I saw this Little Grebe family (there was another chick too). I couldn't believe my luck, as I had been longing to see Little Grebe chicks and there was two parents frantically fishing to feed the hungry youngsters. Thankfully, I had the camera with me.
I used a shutter speed of 1/1250 sec. with an open aperture of f8 (due to using 1.4x extender) and had an auto ISO giving 6400. The shot was taken zoomed to max at 560 mm and further cropped in processing.
