The Licentiate is the first distinction one can
apply for with the Irish Photographic Society. I decided to apply for
this in February 2021 and was assessed on the 21st March 2021. The
assessment required me to submit 10 images which show a range of photography
skills. I chose to submit a nature themed panel rather than a general
panel. It is important that the panel is cohesive and the photos blend so
it can be a challenge choosing 10 photos which 'work'. Often your best
photos are not used.
In laying out my panel I chose to include two bird images in the top corners, the puffin looking in from the right subtly moves the viewers eye into the panel. The lower corners featured two landscape images and to balance the overall view, the water on the left and right flow towards the centre of the panel. The centre shots both look out at the viewer and are balanced. The positioning of wide versus tall images is also important and should be balanced.
A range of skills must be showcased so I included three mono images and these are presented in a triangular pattern. Image 2 showed I could handle speed, images 3 and 9 showed I could handle close-up photography of small subjects. Images 6 and 10 showed I could work with shutter speed in capturing a landscape image. Images 5 and 7 demonstrated my ability at portrait work (although animals rather than humans). Image 4 showed I could present an image within its habitat, while image 1 captured a scene as it happened.
